National Robotics Week

National Robotics Week 2011

The second annual National Robotics Week will be April 9-17, 2011.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the inaugural National Robotics Week in 2010! We celebrated with over 50 affiliated events in 21 states, DC, and Puerto Rico. Over 46,000 people participated, including over 22,000 K-12 students.

The purpose of National Robotics Week is to:

  • Celebrate the US as a leader in robotics technology development
  • Educate the public about how robotics technology impacts society, both now and in the future
  • Advocate for increased funding for robotics technology research and development
  • Inspire students of all ages to pursue careers in robotics and other Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math-related fields

Why is robotics important?

  • Robotics technology is a growing industry which creates high-tech jobs in the US
  • Robotics technologies are helping to improve healthcare, national defense, homeland security, energy, manufacturing, logistics, transportation, agriculture, education, consumer goods, and many other sectors
  • Robotics provides an exciting, hands-on way for students to learn Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math

Computer Science Education Week

Computer Science Education Week, December 5-11, 2010, recognizes that computing:

  • Touches everyone’s daily lives and plays a critical role in society
  • Drives innovation and economic growth
  • Provides rewarding job opportunities
  • Prepares students with the knowledge and skills they need for the 21st century

Why is Computer Science Education Important?

  • It exposes students to critical thinking
  • It is essential for success in the digital age
  • Too few students are exposed to opportunities presented by computer science

Educators, parents, policymakers, professionals and students are invited to become part of this important effort by utilizing the valuable resources on the CSED web site.

Program To Learn has announced dates for our Summer Camps and Combo Camps!  Our Summer Combo Camps let students enjoy both LEGO Mindstorms and Computer Game Design classes - either class alone is a lot of fun and now you can combine both for double the fun.

LEGO Mindstorms Robotics courses provide an exciting introduction to the LEGO Mindstorms Robotics Invention System. Learn mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork skills. Students build different robots and program them with a laptop computer to move, react & make sounds to solve challenges. This class is a good introduction for kids interested in robotics competitions such as FIRST LEGO League.

Computer Game Design courses let participants to create and design their own computer games and animated scripts.  Learn how to create background settings, characters, animate movement, add sound effects and more!  Each child will have access to their own computer during the class.




LEGO Digital Designer Version 4 released

Version 4 of LEGO Digital Designer has been released and is available for download on the LEGO website.  LEGO Digital Designer lets you use a computer to build virtual LEGO creations.  Once you create a virtual design, you can submit it to the LEGO Design byME website, create a custom box for it, have the pieces picked out and shipped to you with a custom building guide.

 The program works on both Windows PC and Mac OSX computers.

New features in LEGO Digital Designer 4 include:

  • New look
  • Online welcome screen
  • Improved rendering
  • Flex tool
  • and much more.

Meet the Future!

International Summit of Science and Technology, 18-19 November 2010, The Hague, The Netherlands

On November 18th the National Platform of Science & Technology organizes a national summit. Over 3000 people representing education, research and businesses will attend national and international oriented seminars, workshops, masterclasses, readings, etc. within the worlds of science & technology. International guests are invited to participate in the international activities on this summit and are stimulated to exchange knowledge and experiences with the Dutch participants.
